One winter day, an Old Man was walking in the forest with his dog. He didn’t notice when he dropped his mitten.

Just then, a Mouse came fumbling around and found the mitten. She climbed inside and said: “This is where I’m going to live.”

Just then, a Little Mouse came fumbling around and found the mitten. She climbed inside and said: "This is where I'm going to live."

After a while a Frog came hopping up and when he saw the mitten he stopped and called out: “Croak-croak! Who is living in this mitten?”

“I am. A Little Mouse. And who are you?”

“I’m a Green Frog. Let me in!”

“All right. Jump in!”

So the Mouse moved over, and the Frog jumped in. Now two of them made their home in the mitten.

After a while a Frog came hopping up and when he saw the mitten he stopped and called out: "Croak! Croak! Who is living in this mitten?"

After a while a Rabbit came hopping up and when he saw the mitten he stopped and called out: “Hello there! Who is living in this mitten?”

“We are. The Little Mouse and the Green Frog. And who are you?”

“I’m the Long-eared Rabbit. May I join you?”

“All right. Jump in!”

So the Rabbit jumped in, and the Mouse and the Frog moved over. Now the three of them made their home in the mitten.

After a while a Rabbit came hopping up and when he saw the mitten he stopped and called out: "Hello there! Who is living in this mitten?"

After a while, a Fox came scampering up, and when she saw the mitten, she stopped and called out: “Yoo-hoo! Who is living in this mitten?”

“We are. The Little Mouse, the Green Frog, and the Long-eared Rabbit. And who are you?”

“I’m the Sister Fox. Won’t you make room for me?”

“All right. Jump in!”

So the Mouse, the Frog, and the Rabbit moved over, and the Fox climbed in. Now the four of them made their home in the mitten.

After a while, a Fox came scampering up, and when she saw the mitten, she stopped and called out: "Yoo-hoo! Who is living in this mitten?"

Soon a Wolf came stalking up, and when he saw the mitten he stopped and called out: “Hello, friends! Who is living in this mitten?”

“We are. The Little Mouse, the Green Frog, the Long-eared Rabbit, and the Sister Fox. And who are you?”

“I’m the Brother Wolf. And I mean to get in!”

“Very well. Go ahead!”

So the Wolf climbed in and the Mouse, the Frog, the Rabbit, and the Fox moved over. And now the five of them made their home in the mitten.

Soon a Wolf came stalking up, and when he saw the mitten he stopped and called out: "Hello, friends! Who is living in this mitten?"

By and by with a crackling of twigs a Bear came lumbering up and when he saw the mitten he stopped and bellowed: “Hello, good animals! Who is living in this mitten?”

“We are. The Little Mouse, the Green Frog, the Long-eared Rabbit, the Sister Fox, and the Brother Wolf. And who are you?”

“Ho-ho! I’m the Big Bear. And though you’re quite a crowd, I know you’ll make room for me!”

“How can we? We’re cramped as it is!”

By and by with a crackling of twigs a Bear came lumbering up and when he saw the mitten he stopped and bellowed: "Hello, good people! Who is living in this mitten?"

“Where there’s a will, there’s a way!”, the Bear said.

“Oh, all right, get in.”

So the Bear squeezed in, too, and now there were six of them inside, and they were so cramped that the mitten was fit to burst.

Meanwhile, the Old Man realized he lost his mitten and went back to find it. His dog sniffed his way to the lost mitten that was lying in the snow and moving!

“Bow-wow-wow!” went the Dog.

And the six friends inside the mitten were so frightened, that out they jumped and ran away as fast as their legs could carry them.

The Old Man picked up his mitten and went home, and that was the end of the story.

Meanwhile, the Old Man realized he lost his mitten and went back to find it. His dog sniffed his way to the lost mitten that was lying in the snow and moving!

The story shows us that hospitality, compassion, and sharing create harmony in a community. Different animals find shelter in a small mitten, and they find a way to coexist, showing us the importance of mutual respect.
