Ukrainian Folk Fairy Tale retold by Clever Hedgehog

Clever Hedgehog heard this funny story from his teacher in school.

Once upon a time, there was a Rooster and a Hen who were lifelong friends and deeply cared about each other. The Rooster was always in a hurry and never slowed down! The Hen often told him, “Dear friend, slow down, don’t rush!” But the Rooster didn’t listen.

One day, as the Rooster was quickly pecking at some bean seeds, one seed got stuck in his throat because he was eating too fast. He couldn’t breathe, couldn’t talk, and fell to the ground looking very sick!

A ROOSTER AND A BEAN SEED

The Hen was scared and ran to a Farmer’s wife: “Please, help! Give me some butter to help the Rooster swallow the bean seed that got stuck in his throat. I’ll bring you an egg as a thank-you!”

But the Farmer’s wife said, “I will help you, but you first go ask the cow for milk, and then I’ll make some butter.”

So, the Hen hurried to a Cow. “Dear Cow, can you give me some milk? The Farmer’s wife needs it to make butter for the Rooster, who is choking. I’ll give you an egg as a thank-you!”

The Cow replied, “I will help you, but you first go to the Farmer and ask him to bring me some fresh grass.”

The Hen ran to a Farmer. “Please, can you give me fresh grass for the Cow? She’ll give some milk that I will give to the Farmer’s wife, who will make butter for the Rooster, who is choking. I’ll give you an egg as a thank-you!”

The Farmer said, “I will help you, but you first go to a Blacksmith and bring me some tools to cut the grass.”

So, the Hen rushed to a Blacksmith. “Can you, please, give me some tools to cut the grass for the Farmer? He will cut fresh grass to feed the Cow, so she’ll give milk to make butter for the Rooster, who is choking. I’ll give you an egg as a thank-you!”

The Blacksmith agreed and gave a sharp scythe to the Hen. The Hen brought the scythe to the Farmer. The Farmer cut the grass and fed the Cow. The Cow gave milk to the Farmer’s wife. The Farmer’s wife made butter, and finally, the Hen gave butter to the Rooster.

The Rooster ate some butter that helped to swallow the bean seed. The Rooster jumped up happily, singing, “Cock-a-doodle-doo!”
